With parts of the Carribean and the eastern seaboard of the United States  declared a ‘major disaster' area as a result of Super-storm Sandy, the  United Reformed Church has assured sister churches - and all those affected by the storm - of its prayerful support.

The URC's deputy general secretary, the Revd Richard Mortimer, said: "The pictures we are seeing on our television screens are horrifying. Millions are suffering; some will be without power or unable to return to their homes for a long time. At a time like this, self-help within local communities is of vital importance - with the strong assisting the less able. The Christian churches will be offering what help they can.

"From this distance, what we can provide is prayerful support.  I am asking all our local churches and church members to uphold in prayer those affected, members of the rescue services, all seeking to offer comfort  and shelter, and all who are far away, worried about their loved ones".
