A few weeks ago I attended a Christian Aid volunteers day at the Leeds Christian Aid office. One of the speakers was Salam, a man who lives in the north of Bangladesh, a member of a group of Christian Aid’s partners. He told us of the difficulties faced by the poorest of the poor who live on low-lying islands near the Brahmaputra River.
The river used to flood from time to time, but with climate change it now floods every year. Morsheda is a mother, who fears the river flooding and washing away her belongings, and the earth underneath her house. She worries that her children could be drowned. Salam said that with the help of Christian Aid the community build up the level of the mud and raise the houses so that the water does not reach them. Morsheda works very hard but only earns 74p a day, which barely provides one meal a day for the children.
Many of you will have seen the Sport Relief programme on television, and have been moved by the film of children in India and Africa in dire poverty. As I write this £55 million has been raised for Sport Relief for work in the UK and the rest of the world. Christian Aid cannot raise money in such a high profile way, but we can do our best to support the ongoing partnership in over 60 countries worldwide.
Christian Aid Week theme this year is Love Every Neighbour. Events are as follows:
Mini-walk – 15th May- can we find more people to walk or more sponsors for those who can? 25% of money raised goes to Christian Aid, 25% to Cafod and 50% to local charities.
Mini-market – 21st May – can you find good quality goods to sell on the stalls, items for a Tombola, books, games, toys, or can you bake a cake or volunteer to help?
1712 – The ladies group 1712 will meet on Tuesday 17th May at 7.30 and this will be a fundraising evening. There will be a speaker from Christian Aid, either Olivia, who has been to Brazil this winter, or Shelagh from the Leeds office.
Church collection – There will be envelopes for donations in Christian Aid Week. If you can Gift Aid your donation that will add 25% to your gift.
