Rev Mark Robinson’s Farewell Service to SPACE
Approximately 140 folk from SPACE and beyond met at the United Reformed Church, Heckmondwike on Sunday 19th August for Rev Mark Robinson’s farewell service, followed by refreshments.
The first part of the service was a light hearted look by Mark at his 7 years in Yorkshire and mastering the Yorkshire humour with a worthy attempt at reciting the “Yorkshire Motto” (‘Ear all, see all, say nowt….).
This was followed by a look at the items on the communion table – a jug, a glove, a basket and a balloon - all of these were open ready to be filled which is how we should be with God. In the reading from Exodus 3:1-5 Mark drew to our attention that when Moses stopped thinking about himself God spoke to him. Like Moses we in SPACE find ourselves in unknown territory and need to stop focusing on ourselves, our own churches and to be open to listen for God’s voice for the future of SPACE.
We were all treated to a fruit sweet and asked to think about the “fruits of the Spirit” and which one we should be nurturing as we ate it….. Mark then said “we are now going to sing……”!!!! Mmmm perhaps he has been in Yorkshire long enough………!!!!
Kevin Watson the Synod Moderator took the opportunity to promote Mark because as he said “Mark does not do this himself” but this had been a real asset and blessing in his role as chaplain to General Assembly.
A good sing was had by all, then Janet Virr, as representative of Mark’s support group and on behalf of SPACE, presented Mark with a basket of Yorkshire goodies and a cheque and then Tessa with an arrangements of flowers with thanks from all and good wishes for the future.
Janet then recited the “Yorkshire Motto” in a true Yorkshire accent and likened the various parts to Mark’s time with us.
Then the food….. various people had been busy shopping, baking etc. and there was a wonderful spread with the centre pieces being a cake stating “we will miss you” and one decorated like a field with grass, flowers and Yorkshire sheep.
I hope Mark got as much enjoyment and encouragement from the service as I did and that he felt the love and gratitude from all who attended that morning.
Once again “Thank you Mark for your time with us and every blessing to you and Tessa in Southampton.”
A message form Mark
I am writing to express my gratitude for all your good wishes and support at my farewell service on Sunday 19th September. Thank you for all the preparation
and work that made the occasion memorable and special for me.
As many of you already know, I have recently accepted a call to the Southwest Hants Group in Southampton and will be moving there shortly. I go with good memories of West Yorkshire and all that it has afforded me and taught me.
And so I would like to take this opportunity to thank each member of the five congregations and my colleagues and let you all know how I have enjoyed working, praying, laughing, crying - the joy, the happiness that we have shared together these past seven years. I wish you as individuals and together as SPACE every blessing for the future and I am grateful for the opportunity to have worked with you.
Please direct all of your respect, care and attention to your minister, the elders and each other as you work towards building a SPACE that God is calling you to. A SPACE that works towards the building up of God’s Work in the church, the community and carrying on the work that Jesus started all those years ago.
Thanks again for everything.
