“Give thanks in all circumstances” (1 Thessalonians 5:18) the Bible tells us. This can be a tall order when things are not going well, but then again when things are going well it is easy to take them for granted.
We have just devised a new game for the children on car journeys. Each of us takes it in turn to say thank you to Jesus for something – it beats “I went to market and I bought …” It is certainly better than the squabbling that can dominate our car journeys and it is surprising what the children come up with.
Let’s cultivate an attitude of gratitude. The Psalmist knew that he had to command his soul and his mind to bring them into line: “Praise the Lord, my soul, and forget not all his benefits”. A dear friend once taught me the principle of thinking of 5 things to be grateful for as I fell asleep at night. Give it a try and enjoy a peaceful night’s sleep and you may even wake up with a smile on your face the next morning!
