This weekend churches begin the season of advent. It is a time of preparation and reflection for the Christmas season. I wonder as Christmas approaches what it is that will occupy our thoughts. For many it will be all the shopping to be done, the presents left to buy. For others it will be the worry of the debt that comes by trying to buy the perfect Christmas. Perhaps in these times of austerity, the task of creating a good Christmas will be more difficult for many. It needn't be. If we were to prepare in the true spirit of Christmas as reflected in the original Christmas story, we would see a gift given in simplicity and with love as God gives the gift of his son Jesus Christ to the world. Whilst it may be pleasing to give expensive gifts, it’s not what really matters. The gift of our time, our care, our presence, our conversation and company, are so much more valuable. The gifts that are a true expression of love matter most. God sent Jesus Christ, and signed the gift “ with love”. Whatever you give, large or small, may it be signed in the same way.
