So it’s almost here, the Christmas that we’ve all been waiting for. All the shopping and baking, the hanging of decorations, the carefully made plans and the hard work – we hope it will all be worthwhile! For many weeks now, from all sides adverts have been telling us to spend money, to buy the latest thing that is on offer, and behind it all is the unstated claim that if we can somehow just spend a bit more, then this year we’ll get it right: Christmas will be the time of happiness, togetherness and love that we all so desperately need, especially at the coldest and darkest time of the year. In fact those things are vitally important, and the good news of Christmas is that our loving Heavenly Father understands our loneliness, grief and pain. He has come into the world to share our life and bring us an answer to our need. His answer is not about having more things and possessions, but about forgiveness, true peace and a relationship with God himself through Jesus, whose birth we celebrate at Christmas time.
