Weekly reflection 22nd August
How many Olympic sports are mentioned in the Bible? These are the ones some of us came up with last week:
Sailing: Noah Genesis 7-8
Wrestling- Jacob wrestled with a man in Genesis 32
Shot put- David shot Goliath with a well-aimed stone in 1 Samuel
Weightlifting- Samson in Judges 13-16
Marathon running- Elijah running from Jezebel in 1 Kings 19
Swimming- Jonah, thrown overboard from the ship in the book of Jonah
Rowing- the disciples rowing against the waves in Mark 6
Over the last two weeks we have marvelled at the fitness and commitment of the 336 British competitors in Rio, bringing home a magnificent haul of medals. Behind all the athletic achievements is an army of supporters, encouragers: doctors, physios, coaches, dieticians, administrators… mostly unseen, but vital to the success of the team.
It’s like that in the Church, too. Some people have very visible roles- preachers, secretaries, Junior Church leaders, welcome stewards. But just as important are those who work behind the scenes. People who make the tea, wash up, do the photocopying, arrange the flowers, do the hundred and one jobs that are essential to the smooth running of any organisation.
What are the gifts and talents that God has given you? And are you offering them so that the life of God will grow and flourish in you and in our community.
